In one of the previous post, I mentioned how our subconscious can be reprogrammed to have new beliefs and enable us to achieve self-improvement. You can do this by visualisation, which can be either the use of visual aids like a vision board or mind movies, or just using your own imagination to visualise. There are other ways to reprogram your subconscious to achieve self-improvement.

Affirmations

AffirmationOne of the best ways to achieve self-improvement is to create a new belief, as if you already are or have already achieved your goal. These new beliefs will come in a form of a statement, and are called affirmations. Affirmations allow you to verbalise that you are the person you want to become. By verbalising it, you are enforcing a new identity or belief consciously. As time goes, your subconscious will pick up the new belief or identity, and will change your beliefs.

The important part for making affirmations is to state it in present tense. It has to have happened now and is not something that will happen in the future. If you want to lose weight, for example, instead of saying “I will be 10kilos lighter in the next two months”, you can say that you’re healthy and fit, and you feel 10 kilos lighter already. If you keep on repeating this statement over the course of the next few months, you will find that your subconscious will pick it up and will enable you to take action towards your goal.

When doing affirmations, you also have to note that you also need to take actions towards your goals. It is not a matter of just sitting and doing wishful thinking. The one thing that affirmations do is help you with the drive to achieve your goals, and also remind you of what actions you need to take to change your beliefs or identity. As the subconscious becomes updated through reciting your affirmations, your new beliefs will now become part of who you are, and new habits and behaviours will come naturally for you. It does not have to be hard work.

My Success Story On Affirmations

I’ve used affirmations in the past for self-improvement and still continually use it. One specific result I had in the past was also to do with my fitness. I didn’t grow up as an athletic person, and in fact, I didn’t used to play or participate in any sport.

Then, when I moved to New Zealand, I was surrounded with friends who are keen health buffs and are into their outdoor activities. At the back of my mind, I’ve always been fascinated with marathon runners and how they could sustain the running for such a long distance. I thought I’ll give it a go so I would have some exercise. It was very tough for me when I started. I would run for a few meters, and i’d start feeling aches and pains and I run out of breath. I first thought this can’t be for me.

I discovered affirmations and started doing one about my fitness and running. I then declared that I’m a great runner and I run marathons. Within the same year as I did my affirmations, I ran a half marathon, which was something I have only dreamed of, and I had my best times with running 10km events and 15km events! Running became a part of me, which was totally none existent a few years before then.

My affirmations have helped implant running to be a part of who I am, and now, I always look forward to an opportunity to do some running. Affirmations are a great tool for self-improvement. I still use it today, and it is one great thing I learned from Dean’s book Reprogramming the Mind For Success.

Have a MOST OUTSTANDING Day,

Present tense affirmations are the best. It’s also important to use affirmations that are credible and believable. It’s also helpful if they connect with you on an emotional level, as well as on an intellectual level.
    Great post!
