Our Auto-Pilot System - The Subconscious
To achieve self-improvement and success in whatever we do, we need to be able to think in a certain way. We need to see or view things differently in order for us to go past those hurdles that we think is blocking our path to success. In order to do this, we need to work on an area of our minds to enable us to form new habits and ways of thinking, such that the new way will become our normal or natural behaviour. This area of our mind is called the subconscious.
The subconscious forms a very important part of how we all think, behave and react to different situations and scenarios. It is in this part of the brain that holds your beliefs about yourself, others and everything else around you. All your habits are formed in your subconscious. Have you ever wondered how you’re sometimes able to do things in an auto-pilot mode and you don’t even have to think about it? It is because that particular behaviour is embedded into your subconscious and your mind just tells your body instantly and instinctively to do the task without having to think.
The same goes for beliefs. There are beliefs that you hold that you never have to think of, it is already part and parcel of who you are and how you respond. You may have a belief that Australia is the greatest country in the world, or that New Zealanders are the warmest people in the world, or perhaps work sucks, or rich people are all evil, or that money is the root of all evil. All these are embedded into your subconscious, and in one form or another, will manifest in the way you behave and respond to situations and people around you, positively or negatively.
Reprogramming the Subconscious
Now how did we ever get these beliefs into our subconscious. We have acquired our beliefs through a process called conditioning. Conditioning happens when we have been taught or bombarded over and over again on an idea or task, and the brain absorbs it over time. The idea or task initially resides on the conscious level, wherein we have to be aware of what we do at the start and exert some effort on thinking how to do something. Then, as time goes on, it moves from our conscious part of the brain to the subconscious and stays there. This is how we get into Auto-pilot mode.
In more physical and anatomical terms, we have some neural pathways in our brain that link certain parts of our mind to form memories of an image. These pathways, when exercised or used, are strengthened over time to form the memory, or they may die for lack of use. This is how the subconscious mind is developed.
If we are to Reprogram the Mind that would enable us to succeed in self-improvement, we need to first work with our conscious mind. Before anything enters into our subconscious, remember that it has to pass through our conscious mind. We need to get rid of our bad habits, negative thoughts, disempowering beliefs and ensure that we feed it with the good stuff, the thoughts and images that we want, the ideas that will take us to the next level. You can do this by visualisation, which can come in many forms. Here are some of the ways you can visualise:
- visual boards (or pictures on the wall of the things you want or desire in your life)
- meditation (creating images in your mind of whatever you desire)
- Videos, MindMovies or multimedia presentations showing images of what you want in life
I read a book called Reprogramming the Mind for Success by Dean Whittingham, and it specifically tells you all the different techniques you can employ in order to reprogram your subconscious and help you achieve your goals. Visualisation is just one part of how you can change or instill new things into your subconscious. There are many techniques you can use for self-improvement.
In summary, the subconscious is the are of the mind that when programmed or reprogrammed properly, can enable you to achieve the results you want in life and will take you to the next level of self-improvement.
I hope this has been a beneficial post for your self-improvement success from self-improvement mindpower.
